How to design your own fantasy creature
Most great fantasy creatures are mash-ups of real animals. A griffin is an eagle plus a lion. Pick two or three animals you know well, then decide which parts to borrow: the body of one, the head of another, the wings or tail of a third.
Next, think about where it lives. A creature from a snowy mountain might have thick fur and wide feet, while a swamp creature might be slimy and green. Its home will tell you what colors and textures to use.
Tips for drawing dragons
- Start with a simple skeleton: a curved line for the spine, an oval for the chest and a smaller one for the head.
- Wings are like bat wings: long finger bones with skin stretched between them.
- Use reference: look at lizards, crocodiles and birds for scales, claws and poses.
- Give it personality: a sleepy dragon, a proud dragon and a shy dragon all stand differently.

Questions
What are good fantasy drawing ideas?
Dragons, griffins, unicorns, mushroom villages, castles in the clouds and wizards are classic subjects. For something original, mix two creatures or put a familiar one in an unexpected place.
How do I make up a fantasy creature?
Combine parts from two or three real animals, then adjust them to fit a habitat, like thick fur for snow or fins for water. Give it a name and a habit to make it feel real.
What are some easy dragons to draw?
A baby dragon, a dragon napping in a teacup or a round chubby dragon are easiest. Simple shapes, short wings and a big head make them quick to draw.
What mythical creatures can I draw?
Try a griffin, pegasus, centaur, mermaid, kraken, hydra, sphinx, jackalope or yeti. Each comes from old myths and folklore, so you can design your own version.
